Monaco: five-star hotels and how to fly there

By the JetChalet editors · Updated · How we check facts

Monaco covers about two square kilometres on the French Riviera, with hotels like the Hôtel de Paris, open on Place du Casino since 1864.1,12 It has no runway, so a private flight lands at Nice, and the last 30 km go by road or by a 7-minute helicopter.10,11

  • 7 minutesby helicopter from Nice-Côte d'Azur airport to the Monaco Heliport11
  • 30 kmby road from Nice airport to Monaco, about 19 miles10
  • 2.08 km²the whole of Monaco, under one square mile12

The short answer

  • Monaco's official tourist office lists Hôtel de Paris, Hôtel Hermitage and Hotel Metropole as five-star hotels. Monte-Carlo Beach, just over the border in France, holds five stars in the French register.
  • Private jets land at Nice-Côte d'Azur, which has a terminal for business aviation, 30 km (about 19 miles) from Monaco by road. A helicopter covers the last leg in about 7 minutes.
  • We publish no flight prices for Monaco yet. Our guide to private jet costs explains how to ask operators for a quote.
  • US citizens need a valid passport and no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180. You enter through France, where the EU records fingerprints and a photo at the border.

Where private jets land for Monaco

Monaco's own air link is a heliport, so jets land in France, most at Nice-Côte d'Azur, 30 km away by road.10,11

Details

Monaco's own air link is a heliport in the Fontvieille district, so jets land in France. Visit Monaco names three airports with facilities for business aviation.

  • Nice-Côte d'Azur (NCE)

The main airport near Monaco, with a third terminal for business aviation. It is 30 km from Monaco by road; taxis wait at Terminals 1 and 2.10

  • Cannes-Mandelieu

About 60 km from Monaco and used only for business aviation (Visit Monaco). Helicopters fly from there to the Monaco Heliport on regular services.11

  • Golfe de Saint-Tropez

About 120 km from Monaco, with a few seasonal routes and many private flights (Visit Monaco).

The private jet route

Most private trips land at Nice-Côte d'Azur, then take about 7 minutes by helicopter to the Monaco Heliport, or 30 km by road.10,11

Details

Most private trips to Monaco land at Nice-Côte d'Azur, which has a terminal of its own for business aviation.10 From there it is 30 km by road, or about 7 minutes by helicopter to the Monaco Heliport in Fontvieille.

Monacair/Blade flies between Nice airport and the heliport; a helicopter booking includes a free minibus between the heliport and your hotel.11 Monacair says its regular line leaves Nice every 30 minutes from 8:15 a.m., with the last flight before nightfall, and that it also flies private charters.14

Visit Monaco suggests the helicopter when traffic is heavy on the A8 motorway. Monacair's last regular flight leaves before nightfall, so after a late landing the last leg is by car.

If your dates are flexible, an empty leg into Nice, a jet flying without passengers to its next job, can cost less than a normal charter; our guide to empty legs explains how they work and the catch.

For the last leg: Nice and a 7-minute helicopter

Most private trips to Monaco end with a helicopter or a car, though a bus and a train also run from Nice airport. These are the three ways we compare, with what the airports and operators publish.
